Roger Federer advice IGNORED as ATP side with Novak Djokovic – Express

The ATP Finals traditionally bounced between countries so fans all over the world could catch the best eight players in action.

Since 2009, London’s O2 Arena has hosted the end-of-season grand finale.

And it has been well represented as over 250,000 spectators attend the event each year.

Federer was keen on the English capital retaining the tournament, such as the great show they continuously put on.

The O2 Arena is contracted to host the event until 2020.

But beyond that, Turin and Tokyo are the likely next destinations.

“I don’t know what the options are. It’s important to look at other options. But if the O2 is happy and the crowd keep flocking here, then it’s a good deal,” Federer said when the topic came to light at the end of last year.

“Why not stay here? I don’t see there’s a reason to change, unless someone else really wants it badly and would support the tour in a big way.

“But it’s been great here, I’ve enjoyed playing here. It’s been a good place to play and showcase our talents.”

But Djokovic wanted the tournament to move around.

“This is the biggest event the ATP owns and you have the best eight players in the world in a unique format of the round robin system so you see at least a certain player three times in a week playing and I just feel this is a great leverage and opportunity to promote tennis all around the world,” he said.

It is the second time this year Djokovic has got his way with the ATP – albeit this time he was less hands on.

Last month, the Serbian led a player revolt against ATP chief Chris Kermode, who is being made to stand down at the end of this season.

World No 1 Djokovic went against the advice of Federer and Rafael Nadal to vote Kermode out during Indian Wells.

He feels tennis needs a change in direction at the very top.
